Fasting (Sawm) in Islam
Fasting (Sawm) is a fundamental act of worship in Islam and one of the five pillars. It is observed during the month of Ramadan, where Muslims refrain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). The purpose of fasting is to attain taqwa (God-consciousness), develop self-discipline, and increase gratitude towards Allah.
Benefits of Fasting
- Spiritual Purification – Strengthens faith and deepens the connection with Allah.
- Self-Control – Teaches patience, discipline, and mindfulness.
- Empathy & Charity – Encourages generosity and understanding of the struggles of the less fortunate.
- Health Benefits – Helps detoxify the body and promotes overall well-being.
Beyond Ramadan, voluntary fasts, such as Mondays and Thursdays, the White Days (13th, 14th, 15th of each lunar month), and Ashura (10th Muharram), are highly encouraged for extra rewards.
